Jeg har i længere tid haft samme oplevelse med thunderbird under Suse.

Jeg har så haft skrevet om det på novice-listen i dag, for så
efterfølgende selv at finde løsningen.

Under Rediger - Egenskaber - Visning - Skriftyper, hvor du vælger dit
standard tegnsæt er der to checkbokse, som kan bruges til at påtvinge
indkomne meddelelser og svar dit standardvalg af tegnsæt.

I mit tilfælde skulle jeg blot fjerne disse markeringer, og så virkede
alt normalt
