Det jeg egentlig mente var bare, at man skal være almindelig bruger for at
kunne skrive java i en shell. Med mindre at man også har gjort java
tilgængelig for root.

På Gentoo der kan man både som root og bruger skrive 

java-config -L

og dermed få listet alle jvm'er der er installeret. Hos mig ser det sådan
her ud:
sslug@sslug ~ $ java-config -L
[sun-jre-bin-1.5.0.04] "Sun JRE
1.5.0.04" (/etc/env.d/java/20sun-jre-bin-1.5.0.04) *
[blackdown-jre-1.4.2.02] "Blackdown JRE
1.4.2.02" (/etc/env.d/java/20blackdown-jre-1.4.2.02)
[blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.02] "Blackdown JDK
1.4.2.02" (/etc/env.d/java/20blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.02)
