Der er tre større Unix omgivelser til NT:

1. Cygwin fra Red Hat.  Det er en Win32 DLL under GPL, og kan kun
bruges med applikationer der også er under GPL, med mindre man køber
en særlig licens af Red Hat.

2. U/WIN fra AT&T.  Det er en Win32 DLL under en "gratis, men ikke
fri" licens.  Jeg mener det er muligt at købe en kommerciel licens fra
AT&T. 

3. Interix fra Microsoft.  Der er et NT subsystem, og ikke det frit i
nogen betydning af ordet,

FSF mener at det er ulovligt at distribuere GCC til U/WIN, fordi GCC
så skal linkes med POSIX.DLL der har en licens der ikke er kompatibel
med GPL.  De har derfor fjernet U/WIN support fra GCC 3.0.

Principielt burde Interix have samme problem, men der er en særlig
undtagelse i GPL for systembiblioteker (som f.eks. libc):

Det er muligt at Microsoft ejerskab af Interix har gjort at de nu har
lettere at påstå det er et systembibliotek (ligesom win32), og derfor
ikke omfattet af GPL.
