Jeg tror jeg har en ide om hvad det er at Carsten antyder.

Der har været patent på en af teknikkerne anvendt i gif. Derfor er
alternativet png udviklet. Nu udløber gif-patentet så og spørgsmålet
er om png overlever. Så langt for citatet fra artiklen.

Linjen til XML har jeg lidt svært ved at se. Problemet er at der
bliver givet patent på nogle XML-formater eller bestemte behandlinger
af disse formater. Dermed kan vi igen blive tvunget til at skulle
opfinde et alternativt format. Dette kan eventuelt undgås ved at
informerer om problemerne der har været omkring gif-patentet.

Jeg mener dog ikke at det spørgsmål som Carstens citat stiller virker
særlig relevant. Men at gif-patentet udløber giver selvfølgelig en
klar mulighed for at opsummerer de problemer der har været med
det. Hvorvidt png overlever er ikke specielt interessant. 

PNG har dog en række andre fordele frem for GIF. Forløbet har nok også
været meget anderledes end de problemer Carsten ønsker at
belyse. GIF-patentet var nemlig oprindeligt et ret hardware-patent,
der først senere blev forsøgt anvendt som softwarepatent. Derfor havde
den patenteret teknologi allerede en stor udbredelse da man begyndte
at blive opmærksom på patentproblematikken.
